New Girl Review: "Fancyman (Pt. 1)" (Episode 1.17)
Every once in a while, _New Girl_ deals with the idea of differing classes, mostly because Schmidt makes an untold amount of money, while Nick is usually struggling to pay for drunken poker bets and has the credit rating of a homeless ghost. But in "Fancyman (Pt. 1)", we meet Russell, played by Dermot Mulroney, a character so successful he makes Schmidt look like a pauper and inspires Nick to want to be so successful that he could be president of Earth. read more

On _New Girl_, no one has garnered more laughs from me than Schmidt. He’s a cocky, organized, control freak that is prone to making himself more so throughout every episode and unusual Schmidt witticism. Out of all the characters, including Jess, Schmidt has probably become the most fleshed out character. We know more about his past, his job, why he is who he is and his romantic life than any of the other characters at this point. It almost seems like Schmidt is becoming more of a lead than even Jess. While I have no problem with the switch of focus, it’s a shame that “Control”’s writing isn’t up to par with what Max Greenfield can do with this character. read more

Most modern sitcoms have an episode where everything sort of clicks, leaving the audience to go “THAT’S why I watch this show.” It’s usually an episode that gets to the heart of what a show is about. Some of my personal favorites include _The Office_’s “Booze Cruise”, “Harvest Festival” on _Parks and Recreation_ or _Community_’s “Modern Warfare”. With “Injured”, _New Girl_ has made their first episode that feels just like that. read more

“Bully” is an episode that all _New Girl_ viewers could see coming. “Bully” has our three main characters involved in stories that we knew would happen eventually. We finally see Jess teaching in her classroom, Nick and Julia’s break up and the reaction to Schmidt and Cece’s Valentine’s Day hookup(s). And of course, Winston is left behind to make a few jokes. But while all these stories were bound to happen, they are all handled much poorer than were expected. read more

For _New Girl_, Valentine’s Day represents change. Jess wants to have a one-night stand since it has been a while since she has spent February 14th alone. Nick and Julia, two people who have never cared about Valentine’s, try to give it their best shot with actually caring. Winston, trying to not use his new girlfriend, Shelby, as a one-night-stand anymore, spends a night in with the girls. Schmidt even does his best to get someone else laud on this night of romance. But _New Girl_ has one of its best episodes by playing off type and succeeding greatly at it. read more

While it has seemed like Nick and Jess have been predetermined to end up together at some point in New Girl, it is less because they are the show’s two main stars, but rather that they are two opposite ends of the spectrum. In “The Landlord”, Jess is the girl who can turn around the angry driver with a gun with only a smile and for the second episode in a row, uses cupcakes as a friendly tool to get others to help her. Simply put, she sees the world with rose colored glasses on, even as a child accepting candy from a stranger in a van, which for once in the world, turned out to be a good thing as he brought his grandmother along to hand out the sweets. On the other hand, Nick’s viewpoint is that people are the worst. Stemmed from a childhood where a man once stole $5 from him and ran away, Nick believes that man does not have the best intentions. New Girl may seem like the wrong format to debate the inherent good or evil in man, but with “The Landlord”, Jess and Nick take on their ideals in an awkward, and hilarious battle, to see who is right. read more

One of the biggest draws of New Girl is also its biggest deterrent, the constantly chipper Zooey Deschanel. Last week New Girl introduced Lizzy Caplan to the show as Nick’s new girlfriend Julia, a girl who is like the anti-Zooey in almost every way. In the episode “Jess & Julia”, we get to see the personification of the portion of the audience that doesn’t like Deschanel go head-to-head with her cutesy ways. read more

When thinking back at some of my personal favorite things about _New Girl_, one of the first things that comes to mind is the Douchebag Jar, in which whenever Schmidt does something douchey, he must insert however much money the judger deems necessary for his douchey crimes. Yet looking back, this ingenious device hasn’t made an appearance since the pilot episode, a crime worthy of creating a whole new jar for the writers of _New Girl_ to place money into. read more
