It seems like hardly a day goes by that we're not reporting on new supergroup shenanigans, and today is going to be no exception. (JUST A FEW MORE REASONS TO HELP SAVE PASTE)Next week, I'll celebrate my 6th anniversary at this magazine. When I started as Paste's second-ever intern on June 1, 2003, we were still a tiny operation. Only five of us were in the office full-time: publisher Nick Purdy, editor Josh Jackson, assistant editor Jason Killingsworth, myself (who would go on to become associate editor) and my intern cohort, Steven Bevilaqua. Other important folks—like senior/film editor and future Paste president Tim Porter, design director José Reyes, and future associate publisher Joe Kirk—were working part-time, since Paste couldn't yet support a full staff. Back then, we were in our... read more

After a Grammy, rave reviews and platinum sales, alt.grass (blueternative?) trio Nickel Creek abruptly went on "indefinite hiatus" in 2007, and have yet to make good on the "for now" part of their "Goodbye (For Now)" tour. Still, the musical impulse burns deep in the scrappy acoustinauts with Chris Thile's 2008 solo album, the Watkins siblings' supergroup, W.P.A., and Thile's currently touring project, Punch Brothers. Fiddler Sara Watkins recently announced the upcoming release of her self-titled debut: an album of long-marinating songs penned during her time spent in L.A.... read more

When Nickel Creek said farewell (for now) to fans and disbanded in 2007, each member said they wanted to pursue solo projects. Vocalist and mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile went off to work with his group the Punch Brothers, where he recently composed a four-part, 40-minute suite entitled "The Blind Leaving the Blind" that features mandolin, violin, banjo, guitar and bass. Singer/violinist Sara Watkins is prepping her long-in-the-making solo album (due in early 2009), produced by Led Zeppelin member John Paul Jones and featuring guests Jon Brion and Gillian Welch.... read more
Found in: Music, NewsNickel Creek kicks off tour with Fiona Apple
Nickel Creek has been waving goodbye (for now) for almost a year a half, and maybe soon it'll actually be true. It's hard to believe they'll ever break their 18+ year habit of playing with each other, and lord knows how many farewell tours we've seen that end with not so much goodbye, but vacation. If nothing else, this fourteen city "last" hoorah will feature two sets of music, much of it with special guest Fiona Apple. And seriously Nickel Creek, why should the fire die? And why must it take your blazing cover of "Toxic" with it? August: 2... read more
