Go Your Own Way: Norah Jones and The Swell Season Recover From Broken Hearts

Is The Fall a breakup record? “I think in a lot of ways it is, and in a lot of ways it isn’t,” says Norah Jones of the follow-up to 2007’s Not Too Late. Her split that year with longtime boyfriend Lee Alexander made the gossip pages, despite her silence on the subject. She has no intention of sharing her thoughts on the matter today, either, though she’s generous with the fries accompanying her hefty veggie burger at the East Village restaurant where we’ve met. “Will you have some?” she asks. “I won’t eat them all.”...  read more

Norah Jones: The Fall

Unexpected dance grooves from jazzy folk star As a jazz-adoring youngster, Norah Jones initially made her mark as a performer, her best-known songs written by others. Jones has since grown up as a songwriter on the biggest of stages, a challenge she’s tackled by turning inward, working with a set of regular bandmates and daring to whisper her increasingly pointed lines when others might over-emote....  read more

50 Best Bob Dylan Covers of All Time

As we began to compile this list of the 50 Best Bob Dylan Covers of All Time—asking for input from Paste readers, writers and editors—someone suggested that it might be easier to compile a list of artists who haven't covered Dylan. I've listened to literally hundreds of Dylan covers over the course of the past week, trying to weigh choices like, "Who's version of 'Tomorrow Is a Long Time' is better, Nick Drake or Nickel Creek?" But I don't mean to make it sound like grueling work. My biggest take-away from this exercise is that going to Dylan for source...  read more

Grohl, Ledger, Vedder, Norah Jones pay tribute to Drake

Even 35 years after the death of Nick Drake, the gentle-voiced cult figure is still soothing tortured souls with his introspective folk music. The English-born musician, who died at the age of 26 of a prescription drug overdose, has inspired a generation of artists, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that a tribute album is in the works....  read more

Norah Jones' El Madmo signs with Team Love, preps debut

image not available

One of Norah Jones’ many side gigs, El Madmo, has signed to Conor Oberst’s Team Love Records, which will release the band's self-titled debut on May 20. As we reported in our March '07 cover story on the singer, Jones regularly plays stealthy gigs with a whole slew of ensembles separate from her solo career. El Madmo, a punkish trio, has posted the cover and complete track listing of the album on its website. Jones fronts the band in fishnets, a blonde wig and painted eye makeup along with Handsome Band regular Dara Oda and Andrew Borger rounding out the...  read more
