Lollapalooza 2009 line-up to feature Tool, Lou Reed, Beastie Boys, Jane's Addiction, Snoop Dogg, many more
After months of anticipation, Lollapalooza has finally announced its full 2009 line-up. Taking place Aug. 7-9 in Chicago's Grant Park, the event hosts the proverbial headliners (Tool, The Killers, Jane's Addiction, Beastie Boys, Lou Reed, Snoop Dog, Depeche Mode), the indie-rock staples (Vampire Weekend, TV On the Radio, The Decemberists, Ben Folds, Of Montreal) the slightly under-the-radar favorties (The Raveonettes, Bat For Lashes, Ra Ra Riot, Heartless Bastards) and the up-and-coming baby bands (Passion Pit, Hockey, The Low Anthem, The Virgins) one might expect, plus many more.... read more

Around the office, we're feeling the SXSW hangover. Our jam-packed week in Austin was nothing short of wonderful, but as sunburns fade and our iTunes continues to process all our new music finds, exhaustion is setting in. Last week, sleep was the major casualty. Morning shows, late-night parties and an overall excitement for the next day left little, if any, time (or more accurately, desire) for sleep. Without further ado, then, here's our Songs About Sleep playlist. Comment below with your favorite sleep-themed tunes.... read more

I’ve just returned from our day-party with Brooklyn Vegan, which threw down with a headlining set from one of my favorite new bands, Passion Pit. File it away: the Cambridge, Mass. electro-pop rockers Passion Pit are poised to be one of 2009's biggest breakout bands. Back in August, the five-piece troupe released its EP, Chunk of Change, which features the jubilant single "Sleepyhead," a song more infectious than the common cold. Think MGMT, but multiply its main ingredients (synths, catchy hooks, falsetto, hand claps) to the nth degree, and add an intro from Jack Kerouac and incomprehensible auto-tuned background vocals. Confused? Just listen (below).... read more

In 2005, Mountain Goats frontman John Darnielle released a terrific little song called “Dance Music,” which chronicled the harrowing experience of growing up. The point of the song was that, when times get really hard, it’s easy to find escapist comfort in dance music. In moments of chaos, Darnielle suggests, you can use the simple pleasures of a dance track to drown out the noise—“so this is what the volume knob’s for,” he sings in one memorable line. We love this sentiment. Lately, dance music is practically all we listen to. And perhaps it’s no coincidence that 2008 has been a... read more
