Last Tuesday was (at least what the band is saying for now) Broken Social Scene’s last concert. It took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and the members left the band ended things on a pretty fun, and sort of wacky note. read more
Found in: Music, NewsWatch Tom Morello Play With Bright Eyes
As Stereogum points out, Tom Morello joined Bright Eyes on stage for a couple of songs that included “Arienette” and a pretty sloppy “Road to Joy.” While it seems like a kind of weird combo, Morello’s mastery of controlled feedback complemented the moody “Arienette” pretty well before he launched into one of his typical whacked-out solos. read more
Found in: Music, NewsTen Awesomely Weird Guitar Solos
For a lot of young Guitar-Hero inspired guitarists, it’s their dream to stand on top of a piano, equipped with leather-pants and a Gibson Les Paul. With the wind blowing through their hair and a Marshall stack cranked to 11, the conditions would be perfect for tear-jerking string bends and spot-on trills. The musicians of this list had no such fantasy. Instead of taking the pre-paved road that is the modern guitar solo, they pushed the limits of good taste, tonality, and what is expected of the person playing the six-stringed instrument. read more

Arizona state legislature’s bill SB 1070, perhaps the most controversial anti-illegal immigration measure most of us can remember, has been sparking flurries of media coverage and debate since its introduction in late April. Now, several musicians, spurred by a letter from Rage Against the Machine’s singer Zack de la Rocha, have contributed their efforts to the cause as well.... read more

As we began to compile this list of the 50 Best Bob Dylan Covers of All Time—asking for input from Paste readers, writers and editors—someone suggested that it might be easier to compile a list of artists who haven't covered Dylan. I've listened to literally hundreds of Dylan covers over the course of the past week, trying to weigh choices like, "Who's version of 'Tomorrow Is a Long Time' is better, Nick Drake or Nickel Creek?" But I don't mean to make it sound like grueling work. My biggest take-away from this exercise is that going to Dylan for source... read more

If you thought the pairing of Chris Cornell and Timbaland was a bad idea, well, go ahead and keep thinking that. Meanwhile, the new collaboration between Tom Morrello (the ex-Audioslave guitarist who once helped funkify the politically charged Rage Against the Machine) and hip-hop vanguard Boots Riley (of Oakland, Ca.'s The Coup) is a bit more respectable and infinitely cooler.... read more
