Goodie bags? Freebies? Music? Special events of some other as-yet-unspecified kind? Supporting local business? Sign us up!
Saturday, April 19, 2008 will be a celebration of the vinyl, plastic and paper variety at your local independent music store. According to RecordStoreDay.com, "On this day, all of these stores will simultaneously link and act as one with the purpose of celebrating the culture and unique place that they occupy both in their local communities and nationally."
Many respected artists have already stamped the event with their approval. Among them was Paul McCartney, who said, "There’s nothing as glamorous to me as a record store. When I recently played Amoeba in LA, I realised what fantastic memories such a collection of music brings back when you see it all in one place. This is why I’m more than happy to support Record Store Day and I hope that these kinds of stores will be there for us all for many years to come."
Composer David Amram likewise asserts, "Record Store Day should be our new national holiday...Let's all celebrate Record Store Day. This can be the first step towards celebrating Record Store Year! Small is beautiful. Let's all try to support independent stores, the communities that they nourish by their presence, and the wealth of music that they make available to all of us."
If that doesn't galvanize the populous, I don't know what will. Other lengthy (and colorful) quotes from musician-types about the day appear here.
All the participating stores are planning to host special events and give customers goodie bags that support new formats, new releases and information about the arts. Marketing as one, the indies will be able to reach a wide audience leading up to the big day. The initiative's organizers (the Alliance of Independent Media Stores, the Coalition of Independent Music Stores, the Music Monitor Network, Newbury Comics and the Value Music Group of Indie Stores) invite all independent stores to participate, whether members of one of the aforementioned groups or not.
Record Store Day will host an introductory party March 15 at SXSW in conjunction with the Mess With Texas Party.
