On Dec. 3 1998, Josh Jackson, Nick Purdy and Jordan Feibus launched PasteMusic.com, a retail site for independent music. The company began with the release of the first-ever live album from Vigilantes of Love. The website grew over the years, selling music from artists such as Pedro the Lion, Over the Rhine, Innocence Misison and Marzuki (a late '90s indie-folk band featuring Sufjan Stevens).

This year, Paste sponsored a tour for Brett Dennen in May. And then, we got so excited about sponsoring tours that we picked up a couple more artists for the bill. And now, here comes news of Dennen's 2009 tour, in support of his album Hope for the Hopeless, as well as another collaboration with Paste.

This Saturday, Nov. 22, Paste senior contributing editor Amanda Petrusich will make the trip from Brooklyn to Atlanta to read from and discuss her new book It Still Moves: Lost Songs, Lost Highways, and the Search for The Next American Music, at Decatur's own Wordsmiths Books. And we can think of no better way to celebrate her cross-genre hybrid-- equal parts memoir, travelogue, music history, and music criticism-- than with some free beer and Americana jams.

Thomas Function, the Alabama band that considers itself part of an ongoing "rock-n-roll renaissance," begins its fall tour next week. The band's debut, Celebration, came out earlier this year (it's quite good, if we do say so ourselves), and the guys are looking forward to the November release of a 7". Below are the dates, along with TF's new "Filthy Flowers" video—be sure to check out the band's Sept. 25 performance at the Paste-sponsored showcase at ACL. (Speaking of which, if you're going to be in the Austin, Texas area on Sept. 25, you should RSVP for the party, which will also include performances from Mates of State, What Made Milwaukee Famous, Bobby Bare Jr., Dan Dyer and White Ghost Shivers. Snap!)

Democracy can be powerful when you get it right. Putting power in the hands of the people means that while you might not make everyone happy, you'll at least be seeing to the concerns of the majority. So if it works for the legislative and executive branches, why not for an Americana and folk-themed vacation cruise?

Hey, party people. Hope the first week of September is treating you quite well. After a cookout-laden day off to start the week, PasteMagazine.com was back on the case in the name of Signs of Life in music, film and culture (Hey, that would be a nice tagline for a magazine!), and here's what we came up with, asterisk style:

Calling all singer-songwriters: Paste is looking for you.

Currently, Paste is accepting submissions for our annual contest, Paste Rock'n'Reel At Sea. Sailing out of Miami this upcoming February, abroad the Norwegian Dawn, Paste and Cayamo are setting out for 'A Journey Through Song' and are inviting all singer-songwriters to enter for a chance to perform alongside the likes of Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt, Patty Griffin and The Indigo Girls.

Bayou soulster Marc Broussard is hitting the road to promote his upcoming record, Keep Coming Back, and he's bringing Paste along with him. But we're not talking the latest issue here; Paste is sponsoring Broussard's "Keep Coming Back Tour," which kicks off on Sept.14 in Fairfield, Conn.

We had a lot of fun compiling (and arguing over) our list of the coolest record stores in the country, but one of the best things about doing a story like this is watching the reader responses pour in. On July 30, we received the following e-mail from Sam Stroud:

Happy 8/8/08, folks. It's a lucky day to some, but for most of us, it's more likely just the end of the work week. And you know what that means...binge drinking! Well, maybe, but also a round-up of all the content on PasteMagazine.com over the last several days.

A year shy of the mid-century mark, The Newport Folk Festival kicks off today in Rhode Island. This year's line-up features a refreshingly eclectic mix of artists, ranging from indie darlings She & Him to tried and true veterans of the Americana scene Levon Helm and Steve Earle.

Someone just started blasting the DuckTales theme song (and Tiny Toons and Animaniacs and Jem...apparently the weekend has officially begun) here in the office, so it must be time for This Week on PasteMagazine.com.

I'm going to blame my lateness on this last week's update on The Dark Knight. That's fair, right? I think so, if only because a) it's awesome, b) it's breaking records and c) Heath Ledger's Joker was more terrifying than an Andy Dick mugshot. At any rate, one of this last week's highlights on PasteMagazine.com was our review of the movie (linked above, natch). But oh, there was so much more...

Welcome to PasteMagazine.com's new weekly round-up feature. I'm your host, Austin, and I edit and assign the content around these parts. Each week I plan to offer up an overview of the stories, blogs, photos, reviews and etceteras we've presented on the site over the last five days. Should be a good time, if I manage to stay on top of it. As of right now, this is just a baby idea that I imagine will evolve from week to week, but one thing is for certain: Expect a ton of links. On Friday (June 27), Metaleap Design and Paste will host a benefit to celebrate the building of the Good Shepard Hospital in Rwanda and to commemorate the 14th anniversary of the 100 Day genocide in Rwanda.

Back from the land of six-dollar beer, port-o-potties and hippie folk, Paste editor-at-large Jay Sweet appeared this morning on Boston's Fox 25 to wrap up the highlights of  Bonnaroo 2008.

Even though the town of Manchester, Tenn. will be jam-packed with fun things to do this weekend, festival goers can start things off right on Bonnaroo Eve by traveling up the road to Nashville. The Official Bonnaroo Kick-Off Party, presented by Onitsuka Tiger, Budweiser, Going.com and Paste, will feature all-girl cover band, Lez Zeppelin, with support from Knoxville-based The American Plague.

Josh Rouse is riding the wave of the future. The singer-songwriter recently announced that he'll be offering online downloads of both new and unreleased music via his website.
