Girls give rock school a go in new documentary
[Above: A fierce, eight-year-old Palace.] With a name like Palace, a little girl can either douse herself in pink and puppies or abandon her implied sweetness, scribble lyrics on notebook paper and rock the hell out. In a new documentary by Shane King and Arne Johnson, Palace and many other girls are taught to do just that: form a band, write songs and put their metal faces on. Portland rock trio Sleater-Kinney has thrown in the towel. The band has posted the following message on its website: “After eleven years as a band, Sleater-Kinney have decided to go on indefinite hiatus. The upcoming summer shows will be our last. After seven years and four albums, underground post-punk sensations Sleater-Kinney have parted amicably with their label, Kill Rock Stars, in order to sign with Seattle-based Sub Pop Records. The trio will soon begin recording its seventh full-length record with producer Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, Low) at his Tarbox Road Studios in rural New York.
