Recently in the Paste office, we received a press release about an Oct. 6 event called Gimme Shelter, which will feature Debbie Harry, Moby and Earl Greyhound, and which was described as a “concert benefiting NYC’s at-risk animals.” Being dog-owners ourselves, we were moved by the whole idea—moved, that is, to commemorate Gimme Shelter with a list of other significant collaborations between musicians and animals. We’re sure we missed some good ones. Add yours in the comments.

Dr. Dre says Detox will come out this year (no, seriously)

|
Dr. Dre has not had an album this millennium.

Since Dre's Chronic follow-up 2001 (which, against the rules of logic, actually came out in 1999), the world's population has risen by approximately 80 million people, and assumedly at least half of these people have released a mixtape with a Lil Wayne feature by now.

Rothbury 2008: Day 2

|
rothbury_jakob_dylan.jpg

Rothbury kicked into high gear on Friday, as Jakob Dylan ushered in the afternoon with a set of dusty Americana tunes. Sporting a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses that could've reflected a nuclear blast, Dylan looked like Sheriff Cooley from O Brother, Where Art Thou? while singing in a comfortable, cool baritone. “Let me be the first up here to say ‘Happy 4th of July,’” he said, drawing applause from the crowd of Wallflowers fans and wandering passerby.

Rothbury Festival reveals bands, environmental concern

|

It seems that American music festivals are multiplying faster than animals that multiply very quickly. We wish we could be more specific about which animals, but we’re prejudiced toward music news, rather than biology. Time is money, after all.

At any rate, the latest event to enter the crowded American festivalplace is Rothbury, billed as the “Next Evolution in U.S. Music Festivals.” One could quibble with the wording, since it’s pretty tough to have successive evolutions, but why be haters when the festival is all about good music and better environmental consciousness, right?

Rothbury, which will take place July 3–6, will feature a Think Tank, where informed individuals will discuss climate change and clean energy solutions, and there will be an energy fair. The organizers are also committed to making the event nearly zero-waste, and a nearby school will even receive a free solar panel system.

Oh, and the music? It’s a mix of festival regulars (Dave Matthews Band, Widespread Panic, Phil Lesh and Friends), indie icons (Drive-By Truckers, Of Montreal, Modest Mouse), and Snoop Dogg. See the full line-up right here. Tickets go on sale Feb. 27.
