Swell Season at Bonnaroo

|

When Swell Season played "Falling slowly," and Glen Hansard asked the crowd to sing along “because we’re really quiet,” and thousands of people took him up on the offer, I remembered why I love music festivals. When Hansard and Markéta Irglová, a pair of actors who became one of recent cinema’s most intriguing fictional couples, then became one of music’s most intriguing actual couples sang Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystic” into the same mic, looking at each other lovingly, I remembered why I love music festivals. When Drive-By Truckers’ Patterson Hood told a six-minute maybe-true, maybe-not six-minute story about his mother with the band playing behind him; when Jack White fell into his microphone stand and knocked over one of the monitors, but kept on tearing into his guitar; when M.I.A. had an overflowing crowd pumping their fists to "Galang,” I remembered why I love music festivals.

Swell Season returns Once more

|

Once seems like such an improper name for a film that you want to watch over and over again. With a touching love story intertwined with beautiful songs, John Carney’s modern-day musical has become the indie-success story of the year. It’s been so successful, in fact, that lead musicians, Glen Hansard (from The Frames) and Marketa Irglova, have had to take the movie soundtrack on the road.

Under the name Swell Season, Hansard and Irglova have already toured the U.S. performing the film's sweet melodies. Now, they are coming back for seconds. The tour started yesterday (Nov. 5) in Seattle and will continue only until Nov. 25. Swell Season’s time here is short, but if the film has proved anything it’s that the second time around is even better than the first.

Dates:

November
5 - Seattle, Wash. @ Moore Theatre
6 - Portland, Ore. @ Crystal Ballroo
8 - San Francisco, Calif. @ Regency Center Grand Ballroom
10 - Los Angeles, Calif. @ The Wiltern
17 - Atlanta, Ga. @ Variety Playhouse
24 - Chicago, Ill. @ Vic Theatre
25 - Chicago, Ill. @ Vic Theatre
