While the Paste parties at this year's SXSW parties were teeming with music fans all day, the crowd was at its most dense as Frightened Rabbit took the stage, and with good reason. The Scottish indie rockers' latest album, The Winter of Mixed Drinks, won the band loads of new fans, and lead to countless comparisons between their lead singer Scott Hutchison and Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz (back when the Crows were at their best).Despite all the buzz around the band, things got a bit dicey for Frightened Rabbit as they were set to take the stage. Several pieces of... read more

Paste's love affair with Freelance Whales started at the CMJ Music Marathon during October of last year, and by springtime in Austin, the relationship was in full bloom as the band played Paste's SXSW party. Click the image to watch the band play "Generator ^ First Floor."... read more

This was my eighth SXSW. But it was the only one where I took a picture of Eric Estrada and Verne Troyer, so the other ones really don't count. Here are my 10 favorite moments from SXSW 2010: read more

Today, I convinced an Austinite friend to drive me a few miles off the beaten path to visit East Austin’s The Broken Neck. If I’ve learned anything in four years of visiting SXSW, it’s that sometimes you need to step a little outside your comfort zone. Not all the good stuff is on 6th Street. Some of the good stuff isn’t even music.... read more

I have a real hard time listening to The Antlers without crying. OK, that’s a pretty unglamorous confession, but there it is—the band’s 2009 magnum opus, Hospice, is basically a 51-minute emotional sucker punch in the best way possible, which makes it incredibly difficult to listen to in public places. Imagine a super-affected concept album about watching your emotionally abusive lover waste away from cancer, and it sounds like the bastard lovechild of Brian Eno and Grizzly Bear. Yeah.... read more

Real talk: I ended up seeing a lot of white guys playing loud guitars yesterday. But the most exciting band of that pastey, distorted ilk—which is saying something, since I also caught excellent sets from Titus Andronicus and new Sub Pop signees Male Bonding—was Bad Sports. The Denton, Texas trio plays melodic garage punk for fans of Jay Reatard and Exploding Hearts, and onstage, the songs pop even more than they do on their self-titled debut LP, which was released late last year.... read more
Found in: Blogs, FestivusSXSW 2010: In The Court Of Let's Wrestle
London-based trio Let’s Wrestle plays a brand of off-key, shaggy-haired rock that could be grating if it weren’t packed so full of bright, catchy hooks. Though most of the crowd at Cedar Street Courtyard was noticeably older than barely-twenty-somethings Wesley Patrick Gonzalez, Mike Lightning and Darkus Bishop last night, they kept shouting “Let’s Fucking Wrestle!” over the shape-shifting riffs.... read more

If, like me, this is your first year at SXSW, you’re probably walking around, map and iPhone at the ready, getting desperately lost whenever you veer off of Sixth Street. But Twitter can help you navigate the maze of people and music (it can help you with most things in life, actually). Here is a list of discerning critics, industry folk and superfans to help you get the most out of downtown Austin, and maybe even find out which hole-in-the-wall pub Bill Murray is bartending at.... read more
