200 Million Thousand Can’t Be Wrong

The old suburban Atlanta warehouse where the Black Lips have set up a portable analog studio to record their sixth album, 200 Million Thousand, looks and feels exactly like the record sounds...  read more

Whoa, We're 8.333% There: The 10 Greatest Musical Things I Experienced in the First Month of 2009

So much for January 2009, huh? That was quick. Seems like only yesterday we had a different president, Valentine's Day was more than a couple weeks off and, um, other vaguely January stuff was happening left and right....  read more

Black Lips safe and sound after all

If you heard about what happened to Black Lips in India over the weekend, you might have thought, "Wow! This is too unthinkable to be true." In part, you'd be right (surprise, surprise), though the Lips did flee the country to a safe house in Germany....  read more

Black Lips on the run in India following indecent exposure

The Black Lips had an, oh, shall we say, interesting weekend. On Saturday, the band posted a letter to its MySpace fans saying it was thrown off the tour in India due to "indecent exposure" for its "most raucous set." Imagine that. From there, the guys literally had to flee the scene to escape getting thrown into a supposedly tuberculosis, maggot-infested prison. "This was a cultural clashing shitstorm," the letter reads. Just one more thing to add to the already-lenghty resume of infamy. Don't let 'em fool you: This is what they live for....  read more

Black Lips announce 200 Million Thousand, Winter tour

You don't have to be a hip-hopper to be an ATLien. Sure, the jewel of the south may be famous for liking its beat down low and its top laid back, but there's a host of weird and wonderful post-punksters and power-poppers brimming in the galleries and dive bars of Atlanta. Take the Black Lips: after 2007s widely-acclaimed Good Bad Not Evil, this coming Spring will see the release of follow-up LP 200 Million Thousand....  read more

Live Review: The Renegades (Black Lips), The Stolen Minks, Goodnight Loving, Jack of Heart @ The Earl 10/16/08

“The last time we played these songs, I couldn’t grow facial hair,” bassist Jared Swilley joked as PBR cans flew over the heads of the packed house at the Earl, where he and his Black Lips bandmates reconvened as The Renegades for a somewhat-secret show last Thursday night....  read more

Black Lips to play The Earl as The Renegades tonight

It's rare for the The Earl's calendar page to sport no description whatsoever for a particular night's event. But the listing for tonight's show doesn't explain anything because, by all rights, the headlining band doesn't exist.  That's right: The Renegades, a semi-fictional band portrayed by the members of Black Lips in the forthcoming Athens-centric film Let It Be, will put on a show tonight, accompanied by Jack of Heart, The Goodnight Loving and The Stolen Minks. (According to some, a few Black Lips folks briefly played in a local Atlanta band called the Renegades, but whether that act has any...  read more

The Black and Whites tour, Mess Around

"I need a good girl," go the very first words of The Black and Whites self-titled debut, "one who will not make out with her friends." It's a not-very-rock-'n'-roll sentiment from a quintessentially rock 'n' roll band, one that seems to pull equal influence from the poppiest moments of bands like Weezer and Guided by Voices and the punkiest moments of bands like the Ramones and Black Flag. Some of their songs are fast, some of them are slower. Many of them, such as "That Girl Ain't No Good," are about the ladies....  read more
