Black Lips and the antics that follow
"That was really, really surreal," Black Lips bassist Jared Swilley told the Chicago Sun-Times in an article published today about the 57-year-old New Yorker who recently climbed to the top of a giant globe in front of the Trump International Hotel -- while wearing rollerblades -- to distribute fliers for the group's show that night. "He was just a fan, and he was really old." So congratulations, Richard Fredette, for demonstrating the appropriate level of mishief we've all come to expect from a Black Lips-involved day. Last week, Fredette's hometown also found itself treated to a record-store originating circus parade,... read more

Fresh off a recent strip club gig, Atlanta's garage marauders, Black Lips, are being featured on the Vice-Records-helmed online broadcasting network (with Spike Jonze as creative director, no less), VBS, this week. The five-part series, "Black Lips in Israel," began today, and so far features the band playing "the biggest Israeli radio station," visiting a strip mall, eating "top-notch hummus" and camping near the Sea of Galilee. And that's just part one (which can be viewed here)! One can only imagine what happens in parts two through five. At least, that is, until those parts are unveiled later this week.... read more

Atlanta’s seediest strip club, the Clermont Lounge, doesn’t need a versatile calendar. Tuesday is karaoke night, and Saturday the cover charge bumps to $10 for D.J. Romeo Cologne, “licensed funktician.” “You all know damn well that we rarely book shows at the Clermont Lounge,” states a recent MySpace advertisement. “The only folks who can get a gig here have got to be fucking amazing.” Apparently, the city’s own Black Lips are up to par. On August 16, the group will join the Supersonics at the infamous venue - perhaps atop what Wikipedia describes as the “single stripper's stage located... read more

What is the best color? Dwight Schrute might say that it is black, since it is the most powerful. And Atlanta-based Black Lips might agree, as they are named for lips of just such a strong, assertive tone. But if their new cinematic statement is anything to go by, the Lips may have just embraced a broader, more lively palette. Our comrades over at The FADER have posted the video for “Katrina,” which can be found right here. “Katrina” is a single from their upcoming album, Good Bad Not Evil, which is out this fall on Vice Records. Expect an... read more

Not ones to ever sit still for too long ("I have an anxiety about being productive. If I have time, I should make the most of it," drummer/vocalist Joe Bradley says.), Atlanta's self-described flower punks, Black Lips, are planning to tour away the remainder of 2007 (dates below). After some yet-to-be announced August dates, the band will spend most of September and part of October on the road with fellow Atlantans, The Selmanaires. Accurately dubbed the "hardest working band at SXSW" by the New York Times, the group will continue touring overseas throughout November and December, those dates also to... read more

Bands usually reserve later slots in their discography for live albums, and rarely tread into that territory as early as a label debut-- but try telling that to the Black Lips, whose first Vice Records release, Los Valentes Del Mundo Nuevo, was recorded live in Tijuana, Mexico, last year. Showcasing favorite songs from the underground psych-punk outfit’s three previous offerings (released by smaller indie labels Bomp and In the Red) in the frenzied context of one of their notoriously raucous live shows, Los Valentes is scheduled for release on February 20th, 2007. Check out the Vice-released video “trailer” of the... read more
