Rosebuds, Submarines, many more pay tribute to The Cure

|
It just happens one day. All of a sudden, a band has been around long enough to put out its 13th studio album and get tribute paid to it in the same year. And then again in the next. It's not an easy feat to stay so productive for so many years (and inspire the same in so many others), but then neither is applying Robert Smith's make-up through it all. (We kid because we love, Bob!)

The Cure: 4:13 Dream

|
Old Dog, Old Tricks

Like much of Robert Smith’s work over the past decade, 4:13 Dream is an ambitious mess. The sound is big and unruly: backward tape effects, strangulated psychedelic guitars, Smith wallowing, freaking out, repeating, “You’ve got what I want” with the sublime petulance of a disenchanted old Goth. He isn’t mellowing with age, but serving up more Cure, as you’ve come to expect. The slow, ominous churning on six-minute album opener “Underneath The Stars” suggests we’re approaching Bloodflowers territory. But the immediate Head on the Door pop of “The Only One” indicates we’re in for a Whitman Sampler of the band’s career. “Freakshow” doesn’t quite rock. “The Scream” features apocalyptic moaning and a disconnected beat. “The Real Snow White,” “The Perfect Boy” and “This. Here and Now. With You” are fueled by sing-song moments and earnest writhing. Looks like the only thing missing from the current-day Cure is an editor.

In a world where one can collect many worthy things—stamps, Coke cans, baseball cards—why not collect The Cure? In anticipation of its September 13 release, the band has opted to release a single for the 13th of each month leading up to its 13th studio album, which comes on Sept. 13th.

That’s right, expect four exclusive singles with b-sides in the coming months and then a whole new album. So far the singles have only been announced for May and June. “The Only One” will include the b-side “NY Trip.” On June 13, the band will release “Freakshow,” including the b-side “All Kinds of Stuff.” All the more reason to be a Cure-atelist instead of a philatelist.

The currently untitled release will be The Cure's first full-length album in four years, and will be released via Suretone/Geffen Records. Plus, in a week’s time, Robert Smith and company will embark on a tour of North America, including a stop at Sasquatch. Can’t wait until then to hear the new stuff? Head over to TheCure.com to stream a bit from the first new track.

The Cure pin down new dates, headline Sasquatch!

|

The Cure has rescheduled its next major tour from fall to spring, which should help out with the Reverse Seasonal Affective Disorder likely suffered from by many of its biggest fans (not because the sun offends their pale skin and black clothes, mind you, but because hello - allergy season). According to the band's official site, "It's all happening slightly later than we expected due to 'The Playoffs.'" Perhaps you'd assume that men who fancy mascara would hold lifelong resentment toward jock-types and their March Madness, but members of the Cure admit they "understand [the cities/teams] all have to live in hope!"

A Seattle gig at Key Arena was the only show on the fall itinerary not rescheduled as originally planned, having been replaced by the closing spot at Washington's Sasquatch! Music festival (all tickets for the Key Arena concert will be honored). The Cure will get 150 minutes of stagetime.

Robert Smith and company decided on this dramatic shift in concert dates to continue finishing their new, yet-to-be titled release on Suretone/Geffen, expected to drop sometime before the gigs listed below.

May
9 - Fairfax, Va. @ Patriot Center
10 - Philadelphia, Pa. @ Wachovia Spectrum

19 - Kansas City, Mo. @ Starlight Theatre
21 - Morrison, Col. @ Red Rocks
23 - Salt Lake City, Utah @ E Center
25 - George, Wash. @ Sasquatch! Music Festival
26 - Vancouver, B.C. @ GM Place
29 - Santa Barbara, Calif. @ Santa Barbara Bowl
31 - Los Angeles, Calif. @ Hollywood Bowl

June

The Cure stands up America

|

Memories of unsuccessful dates past just came flooding back. Painful, tear-inducing thoughts of an empty chair across the table. Pensive, desperate looks for someone (anyone!) holding a rose. And now, to top it all off, The Cure is canceling its fall tour dates. Those aren't tears; we just have an eyelash in our eye, OK?

Ahem.

The Tripwire reports that the band's upcoming double-disc release isn't living up to Robert Smith and Co.'s "total satisfaction" just yet, so they're pushing the dates back to next spring. Better late than never, kids.

The Cure - Three Imaginary Boys

|

The Cure’s “return” to its punk roots in 2004 was a total wash. But now’s your chance to get the bad taste of the band’s KoRny joint venture with nü-metal production hack Ross Robinson out of your mouth; to renew your faith in the World’s greatest Goth band with the long-awaited domestic issue of its seminal U.K. debut. In correlation with the 25th anniversary of its initial release, Rhino presents this expanded version of 3IB, which includes the original LP along with a bonus disc containing b-sides, cassette-only tracks and home demos, including songs that later appeared on the band’s equally essential U.S. debut Boys Don’t Cry.
