The Best Worst Voices In Indie Rock

image not available

Last week we debated the best voices in indie rock. But there’s another kind of great voice out there—the kind that isn’t classically good, but its technical problems just make it more lovable. Here are my picks for the best worst voices—you can listen below. Feel free to add to the list in the comments section....  read more

The Decemberists Announce Fall Tour Dates

Those clever Portland indie-rock poets The Decemberists have just announced the fall dates for their upcoming tour that they've been calling "A Short Fazed Hovel," but the tour could be described as anything but short. Thus far, they've already promoted and performed their latest narrative-style album, Hazards of Love, at multiple music festivals and sold-out venues, and the autumn season is looking like it will shape up to be equally industrious....  read more

Best Music of 2009 (So Far): Kate Kiefer, Associate Editor

To celebrate the half-way point of 2009, this week Paste staffers are counting down their favorite albums and songs of the year (so far). Check out all of our lists here, and share your own favorites in the comments. You might notice that Passion Pit’s Manners isn’t on my list, and that’s because I don’t like Passion Pit very much. (Apparently I’m in the minority.) I didn’t include Wild Light’s “California On My Mind” either, but that’s only because Josh plays it so many times a day that I feel like it’s his own personal song. As for the music I did include…if...  read more

Best Music of 2009 (So Far): Josh Jackson, Editor-in-Chief

To celebrate the half-way point of 2009, this week Paste staffers are counting down their favorite albums and songs of the year (so far). Check out all of our lists here, and share your own favorites in the comments.I've always been an album guy, but this is shaping up to be a singles year for me. I've already had quite a few songs on repeat—particularly a somewhat profane power-pop anthem from Wild Light. So my Top 10 Songs has become a Top 20, partly because of the brilliant charity compilation Dark Was the Night. Bon Iver, who didn't release a...  read more

Bonnaroo 2009: Progging Out with The Decemberists, Mars Volta

image not available

Still royally tuckered out from some late-night Girl Talkin', day three at Bonnaroo was pretty mellow for me. I spent most of it catching the tunes at the Sonic Stage (Brett Dennen, Grace Potter, Heartless Bastards, etc.) where the lovely Paste oasis is stationed. In early evening, I caught a solid half hour of Athens, Ga. kooks, Of Montreal, who absolutely won me over. As soon as I return from Manchester, I plan on listening to their songs that have been sullenly sitting on my iPod, just waiting to be loved. ...  read more

Mastodon Unveils Custom Vans, Paste Demands More Musical Product Endorsements

image not available

If you thought that custom edition Vans were strictly the purview of pop-punk bands, think twice. Think three times if you need to. An ad from this month's issue of Decibel (pictured above) shows a pair of Vans emblazoned with the man-deer-demon from the cover of Mastodon's 2006 tour-de-rock, Blood Mountain. Now you'll have some very metal footwear for your own epic quest to find the Crystal Skull. No word yet on whether the deer skull will be included or if it's one of those pre-order promo dealies....  read more
