"Keep the Fire" with yacht rock (on an actual yacht) this Saturday

|
Ah, smooth jams. Hall & Oates, Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald, Steely Dan, The Eagles: For some, the songs inspired slow dancing, and for others it’s the very music that brought them into this world. “Yacht Rock,” a surprise hit web TV series that spins the hilarious (fictional) tales behind those come-on tunes, gave the genre a new name and also inspired DJ nights across the globe. Chicago was no exception.

The Eagles to headline Stagecoach 2008's added third day

|

The brains behind the Stagecoach Country Music Festival (Coachella's alter-ego) just added a third day - Friday, May 2 - to its schedule, and have pulled down none other than The Eagles to headline it. The event, billed as "California's country music festival" features other big-name country, bluegrass, folk, roots rock and alt.country acts like Rascal Flatts, Tim McGraw, the Judds, Carrie Underwood and Big & Rich. The added opening day alone boasts John Fogerty, Trisha Yearwood, Shelby Lynne, Glen Campbell and Rissi Palmer.

The Eagles released their most recent album, the extremely-high-selling Long Road Out of Eden, last year, and will perform some of its material at Stagecoach, along with a sampling of songs from the rest of their extensive career.

Stagecoach takes place May 2-4 at the Empire Polo Field in Indio, Calif. Ticketing information, especially concerning the added third day is available at the tickets page of StagecoachFestival.com.

The Eagles soar over the Billboard album charts

|

The Eagles are not for everyone. But baby boomers with lots of disposable income do tend to have a special spot in their hearts for the group.

So it doesn't come as much surprise that, even with its new double-disced album Long Road out of Eden available only at Wal-Mart, the group topped the latest Billboard charts. Yeah, okay, maybe you're yawning just reading that, but there are a few things to note here. Billboard, in all of its wisdom, abolished an old rule prohibiting "exclusive" albums from the charts. Now even discs sold at just one retailer can make the prestigious Billboard 200. Given that retailer exclusives are on the rise lately (we're looking at you, Billy Corgan), this move seems to further legitimize the practice. Secondly, the group shifted 700,000 units, which is pretty damned impressive in today's music industry environment.

Clearly, big record label execs are going to study this release over the next few months to see if they can emulate it. Is Fleetwood Mac up for a Best Buy-exclusive album? Only time will tell...
