The New Normal Review: "Dairy Queen" (Episode 1.15)

The New Normal Review: "Dairy Queen" (Episode 1.15)

Surely, there’s a better way that The New Normal could have handled breast-feeding than how it did in “Dairy Queen.” It’s clumsy, over-the-top and silly in all the wrong ways. If Jane is the strongest part of the episode, that should be a surefire way to tell something might be wrong. read more

The New Normal Review: "The Goldie Rush" (Episode 1.12)

The New Normal Review: "The Goldie Rush" (Episode 1.12)

In the last few episodes before its almost month-long winter hiatus, The New Normal had started to address the show’s problems in a very strong way. Goldie had a purpose, Bryan didn’t seem quite as self-centered and Jane had scaled back the constant racism quite a bit. But having made many of these changes, The New Normal still can have episodes that can grate on the nerves. read more

The New Normal Review: "The Godparent Trap" (Episode 1.07)

The New Normal Review: "Bryanzilla" (Episode 1.06)

The New Normal Review: "Bryanzilla" (Episode 1.06)

“Bryanzilla” is probably the show’s most balanced attempt at what it wants to become, while having one of the weirdest plots of any episode so far, and still having problems in its delivery of any form of message. read more

The New Normal Review: "Nanagasm" (Episode 1.05)

The New Normal Review: "Nanagasm" (Episode 1.05)

The New Normal can at times be a decent show. When the show tries to force the idea that it’s progressive or promotes differences while simultaneously exploiting and insulting those with the same differences, that’s when the show fails and fails hard. So far in its premiere season, The New Normal is about half and half, winning over with heartwarming family dynamics one week, before insulting any minority, belief or disability it can the next. “Nanagasm” thankfully isn’t as aggressively anti-different as it can be (see last week), but even without that, this week’s episode doesn’t succeed in the family aspects either. read more

The New Normal Review: "Obama Mama" (Episode 1.04)

The New Normal Review: "Obama Mama" (Episode 1.04)

The New Normal is a deceptive show, one that touts itself as open to all kinds of people, yet on the inside, openly mocks people who are actually different. This is no more apparent than in “Obama Mama,” which after previous episodes have insulted people of different races, sexualities, disabilities and more, this episode takes on politics. read more

The New Normal Review: "Baby Clothes" (Episode 1.03)

The New Normal Review: "Baby Clothes" (Episode 1.03)

For the first two episodes, _The New Normal_ had problem balancing the heartfelt creation of an unconventional family with the show’s attempts to find humor in differences in others, insulting stereotypes and the bashing of almost all minorities. read more
