Rosebuds, Submarines, many more pay tribute to The Cure

|
It just happens one day. All of a sudden, a band has been around long enough to put out its 13th studio album and get tribute paid to it in the same year. And then again in the next. It's not an easy feat to stay so productive for so many years (and inspire the same in so many others), but then neither is applying Robert Smith's make-up through it all. (We kid because we love, Bob!)

The Rosebuds: Life Like

|
Unassumingly excellent moonlight romps under the milky-way night

Having delved into glossier synth-pop on Night of The Furies, The Rosebuds have returned with guitars cranked, reverb in the mix and a warmth and twirl in their arrangements that recall The Church. “Cape Fear” glides by like a silenced black motorcycle, while “Border Guards” is like The National without as much languid self-interest. There’s a haunting quality to these songs that belies the album’s casual four-track origins, the presumably acoustic skeletons cloaked in shades of silky texture enhanced by stacked vocals and subtle-but-driving drumming. “In the Backyard” crowns the album with a lush open-sky guitar part and moody lyrics. It’s heady and magical stuff.

The Rosebuds to tour on Life Like

|
The term Team Love might already be claimed by Conor Oberst's record label, but it's also pretty applicable to describe bands whose members' musicianship and personal lives are delightfully compossible. The Rosebuds' Ivan Howard and Kelly Crisp are, yes, a couple (see similar inclinations in Mates of State, KaiserCartel, Quasi, The Handsome Family) whose fourth album, Life Like, comes this Oct. 7 from Merge Records. They're also a two-headed tour-machine whose fall will include as much nuzzling on the open road as it will, well, nuzzling on the stages played along that road.

Rosebuds to release Life Like in October

Perusing the interwebs via a Google search for Life Like, we came across some goofy things. Most notably, this "life-like foam cooler" and allegedly life-like robot, which just rekindled our childhood fear of spilling water on our stuffed animals post-Gremlins.

Band of the Week: The Rosebuds

|

Band of the Week: The Rosebuds
Hometown: Raleigh, N.C.
Fun Fact: The Rosebuds formed only hours before their first-ever gig, responding to a last-second cancellation at a local venue.
Why They’re Worth Watching: Night of The Furies introduces the dance floor euphoria of New Order to the melodic charms of modern day indie-pop, all while weaving a cinematic narrative that alternately seduces and sounds a sinister warning.

On their third album, Night of The Furies, Ivan Howard and Kelly Crisp explore the power of what’s left unsaid. Gloom has largely been banished from the forefront, ceding the floor instead to beat-happy synth-pop and propulsive indie rock anthems like “Cemetery Lawn” (complete with a jubilant “Whoa-oh-oh! Woo!” on the chorus), which would fit nicely on a mix alongside labelmates such as The Arcade Fire. Beneath the warm exterior, though, lurks an uneasy lyrical center.

The Rosebuds - Night of the Furies

|

You’ll come for the concept, but you’ll stay for the big melodies and sly beats

On their seductive third album, The Rosebuds split the difference between indie pop and dance music, laying hard into the seam where coy sweetness dovetails with simmering sensuality. House-music drums and rubbery bass quiver tensely through the blocky arrangements while Ivan Howard’s ghoulishly posh croon calls to Kelly Crisp’s demure yet tough responses. Fluid guitars, thinly sliced metallic synth flutters, and bright keyboards carry the songs through haunting peaks and sloughs and foggy harmonies. There’s an understated drama to Night of the Furies, one that has more to do with its razor-sharp songwriting than its belabored conceptual framework—the mythological narrative neither enhances nor detracts from the album’s allure. But its bipolar nature wins you over—in terms of tone, Furies covers a broad range, from the dark pulsations of “My Punishment for Fighting” to the sunny bombast of “Cemetery Lawns” and the ’80s pop futurism of “I Better Run.”
