Ryan Adams & the Cardinals and Arlo Guthrie have been added to the lineup of the 35th annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival, to take place June 19-22 in Telluride, Colo. In addition to headliners Adams and Guthrie, this year’s festival features an impressive mix of up-and-coming artists and veteran performers. Southern songbird Tift Merritt, former Nickel Creek member Chris Thile and his band the Punch Brothers, and indie veteran Ani DiFranco will take the Telluride stage, as will Oscar darlings Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, The Swell Season. After an agonizing weekend waiting for updates on the official Coachella '08 roster, Goldenvoice president Paul Tollett finally threw us a gigantic friggin' bone on Monday afternoon at a press conference in Mexico City, announcing the honest-to-goodness, no-for-serious-this-time list of bands that will travel to Indio, Calif. on April 25, 26 and 27 for three days of fun, funk, Frisbee and lots and lots of dancing. Friday night's headliners are Jack Johnson, The Verve and Raconteurs; Saturday's are Portishead, Kraftwerk (Tollett: "If you haven't noticed, we're a fan of the robots."), Death Cab for Cutie and Café Tacuba; Sunday's are...  read more

Once arrives on DVD next week

image not available

With a low budget and a largely amateur cast, Once has improbably triumphed on the railways of film to become the little docu-drama that could. In 2007, the movie walked away with the Sundance Film Festival's coveted Audience Award, launched stars Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová on a U.S. tour, and even snagged a cozy number two spot on Paste’s year end film list. Now, having traveled up and down the hills of indie success, the film can finally come to rest with you at home. Director John Carney’s extraordinary movie is set to be released on DVD with extras...  read more

Wild Sweet Orange releases EP, tours

image not available

Wild Sweet Orange. It sounds like something you would find growing next to the road as you drive through the Florida country side. But the guys that comprise this band are from Birmingham, Ala., and their sound is a far cry from the campy island tunes that saturate Floridian coastline hotels. On Tuesday, the soft and insightful indie-rock group released its EP, The Whale. The band is signed to Canvasback Music, the same label that has brought us Manchester Orchestra, Annuals and Swell Season. The band kicked off its tour yesterday. Dates: November 7 - Portland, Ore. @ Roseland Grill*...  read more

Swell Season returns Once more

image not available

Once seems like such an improper name for a film that you want to watch over and over again. With a touching love story intertwined with beautiful songs, John Carney’s modern-day musical has become the indie-success story of the year. It’s been so successful, in fact, that lead musicians, Glen Hansard (from The Frames) and Marketa Irglova, have had to take the movie soundtrack on the road. Under the name Swell Season, Hansard and Irglova have already toured the U.S. performing the film's sweet melodies. Now, they are coming back for seconds. The tour started yesterday (Nov. 5) in Seattle...  read more
