And then there were two—again. The Thermals just announced that their current drummer, Lorin Coleman, will be leaving the band, but with the warmest of well-wishes.
According to singer/guitarist Hutch Harris’s MySpace blog, Coleman intends to devote his newfound free time to his other band, Andy Combs and the Moth. And as for Harris and bassist Kathy Foster?
“I think Kathy and I will be splitting drum duties on this next record, and possibly every one that follows it,” Harris wrote on his blog, as quoted in Willamette Week.
This seems to be a bit of an inescapable pattern for the Portland-based Thermals. Over the course of the group's six-year history, Harris and Foster have gone through at least three drummers (well, two and a half, if that’s possible—according to All Music Guide, Caitlin Love just helped them out with a tour in 2006). Look for a complete update on past Thermals’ whereabouts on the band's website in the somewhat-near future.
Given their forthcoming album, one would imagine this could cause strain on the creative process. But Harris and Foster are well-adjusted to coaxing a trio sound out of a duo situation. This is proven through their other project, Hutch and Kathy, and the Thermals’ 2006 album, The Body, the Blood and the Machine, which was recorded with just the two of them.
The initial trio got their start when one Ben Gibbard heard the band’s material and pushed for them to join Death Cab on Sub Pop. The Thermals have worked with some pretty decent folk when it comes to producers, including Gibbard’s bandmate Chris Walla (on More Parts Per Million) and Fugazi’s Brendan Canty (on The Body).
Drummer or no, at least the two remaining Thermals have each other to keep themselves warm.
