During a video interview with Rolling Stone, Sonic Youth guitarist/vocalist Thurston Moore announced that he is collaborating with Be Your Own Pet's Jemina Moore for a cover of the Ramones tune "Sheena is a Punk Rocker." And who, pray tell, has commissioned the song for usage on their soap opera? That's a secret I'll never tell. You know you love me. XOXO, Gossip Girl.
Thurston Moore's work is never done. Co-founding and frontmanning Sonic Youth wasn't enough. Neither was composing for film, curating shows, directing music videos, running a record label, releasing solo work or editing and writing criticism and poetry.Watching this behind-the-scenes video of Thurston Moore working on his first solo album in 12 years, it’s satisfying to see him continually defining effortless cool. Even as he sits wrapped in a mint-green bath towel getting his hair clipped by Kim Gordon, who herself dons a tasteful black turtleneck, somehow the shot is engrossing and you kind of wonder why your haircuts aren’t family affairs with low-key, weirdly-tuned soundtracks.
Moore’s new album, Trees Outside the Academy, will be out on his Ecstatic Peace label in September. For the 12-song disc, Thurston jams on acoustic guitar and bass with fellow Sonic Youth member Steve Shelley bringing the drums. A few guests come in to mix it up, including Christina Carter of Charalambides, who they assert has the most “beautific voice on land, sea and air.” It you dug the band’s last effort, Rather Ripped, get fired up because Trees was recorded and mixed by the same dude, John Agnello.
