Tom Petty will tour up a storm in '08

|

Apple pie. The stars and stripes. Ironically, French fries. Thinking about how great America is? Football. Rock 'n' roll. How 'bout now? Is your patriotic blood all astir? Let's get a little more specific: SUPER BOWL. TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS. FEBRUARY 3. Immediately followed by the tickets for Petty's recently announced 2008 North American tour going on sale (although fan club members can wiggle in early on some pre-sale action if they so desire). It almost sounds too American to be true!

Luckily, the May-Aug. dates are all fact (except the to-be-determined venues in Denver and San Francisco), and Petty's performance at the Super Bowl XLII halftime spectacular is just one of the latest lightning bolts in a flurry of activities recently checked off of the blond rocker's to-do list.

In 2006, Petty & the Heartbreakers celebrated 30 years together on a sold-the-heck-out anniversary tour. Last November saw the release of Runnin' Down A Dream, a four-hour-long documentary directed by Hollywood legend Peter Bogdanovich.

Just last week, L.A. Weekly published a beautiful, extensively researched chart of Tom Petty's Los Angeles, an annotated guide to Petty's rise from a Florida ex-pat placing his demos in the hands of every record exec in town to one of the city's most faithful chroniclers.

Tom Petty slotted for Super Bowl halftime show

|

Classic rocker Tom Petty and his Heartbreakers will perform the coveted halftime slot at the Super Bowl in Arizona on Feb. 3. Earlier this year, nearly 140 million Americans tuned in to see Prince play the 2007 slot. Other recent acts have included the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney and U2.

Airing on Fox, the NFL's annual championship game will be held at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona just outside of Phoenix. Petty's performance will mark the rare occasion where the veteran rocker, who once threatened to title an album "$8.98" after his label would not lower its price, will partner with a corporate sponsor. That corporation is tire manufacturer Bridgestone Corp, which will be sponsoring the halftime event.

Tom Petty gets rockumentary treatment

|

Many a great director has tackled the rockumentary, including Martin Scorsese, Jonathan Demme and Jim Jarmusch. Now another icon will imbue a rock god with cinematic magic: Peter Bogdanovich, the director of the 1971 masterpiece The Last Picture Show and recent actor in The Sopranos, has created an epic film about the one, the only Tom Petty and his merry band of followers, the Heartbreakers.

Runnin’ Down a Dream: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers will be one of the final films shown at the prestigious New York Film Festival, and it features rare concert footage and archival material, as well as interviews with Stevie Nicks and Johnny Depp, among many others. The movie also boasts an extraordinary 253-minute runtime, which likely means that no detail of Petty’s career will be overlooked.

Tom Petty Tours With Strokes, Frank Black, John Mayer

|

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers have announced the third leg of their U.S. summer tour, which originally kicked off June 9 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of the band’s debut album.

Beginning Sept. 14 in Chicago, the third leg will include a headlining performance at this year’s Austin City Limits Festival as well as a stop in the band’s hometown of Gainesville, Fla.

A handful of impressive supporting acts will be featured on the tour, including The Strokes during the first half, and Frank Black and John Mayer during the second. Stevie Nicks is also set to join the band through leg two and three of the tour.

The second leg will run July 30 through Aug. 18, and will feature guest performances from Trey Anastasio (who opened the entire first leg) and The Allman Brothers.

Also set for the summer is Petty’s third solo album, “Highway Companion,” which will be released July 25.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Celebrate 30 Years

|

Thirty years, 12 albums, 16 Grammy nominations and an induction in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame after the release of their self-titled debut, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers are still going strong. The band is touring America, playing several sold-out shows, including the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester, Tenn. last Friday.

In recognition of the anniversary, Peter Bogdanovich, who was nominated for a Best Director Oscar for 1971’s The Last Picture Show, will take the helm of a new film documenting the band’s long career.

Petty’s current projects don’t end with the Heartbreakers. The rocker recently inked a contract with American Recordings, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Records founded by producer Rick Rubin. Petty is due to put out his third solo release, Highway Companion, on July 25 on his new label. The album was produced by Jeff Lynne — who also produced 1989’s Full Moon Fever and 1991’s Into The Great Wide Open — along with Mike Campbell, who plays guitar in Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, and Petty himself.

In addition to recording and performing, Petty has also been trying his hand at radio DJing. The second season of “Tom Petty’s Buried Treasure” airs on XM Satellite Radio on Mondays at 10 a.m., with repeat performances on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. and Saturdays at 4 a.m.
