Will Youth In Revolt be the Movie Where Michael Cera Finally Sheds His Man-Boy Cocoon?

image not available

There's a stage in the metamorphosis of the butterfly called the "pupa" where the caterpillar nestles inside a hardened shell as it begins its transformation. Usually, the pupa stage lasts no longer than a month. Every now and then, though, we see curious cases of organisms bucking evolutionary trends. Take Michael Cera, who's been trapped in a man-boy cocoon of his own devising in the six years since he emerged as the endearingly awkward George Michael on Arrested Development....  read more

Watch the The Wolfman Trailer

image not available

At this point, expectations for The Wolf Man run so low that the movie will have to be quite something to overcome them. Its beleaguered studio, Universal, has shifted the release date four (!) times. It’s directed by Joe Johnston, known for Jumanji and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Stars Benico Del Toro, Emily Blunt and Anthony Hopkins have basically gone the “It’s just entertainment” route in interviews....  read more

Watch the Trailer for James Cameron's Avatar

image not available

So, here is the trailer for Avatar. You’ll probably need to watch it a few times. It is hard to overstate how hyperbolic everyone has been about this movie, which is directed by James Cameron (Titanic, Aliens, T2) and is expected to become the moment when 3D ceases to be a ticket-selling gimmick and instead becomes an irrefutable artistic endeavor. We’ll see. For now, there sure are some beautiful sights here, and even if he hasn’t really broken out yet, Sam Worthington has the unmistakable affects of a movie star. Hollywood is not an industry that enjoys risks like this,...  read more

Watch the Trailer for Werner Herzog and David Lynch's My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done

My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done has a pedigree that almost guarantees it an audience (IE: Werner Herzog directs, David Lynch produces), so it doesn’t really matter that this first trailer makes the movie look like a glum, dull retread of other self-serious thrillers. The film follows the apparently true story of a man (Michael Shannon) who acts out a Sophocles play in his head and kills his mother (Grace Zabriskie, from Big Love) with a sword. The cast also includes Willem Dafoe, Chloë Sevigny and Michael Peña....  read more

Watch the Latest Trailer for The Twilight Saga: New Moon

First teased last week with a mind-numbing “preview of the preview,” the full trailer for The Twilight Saga: New Moon has the same money shots as the glimpse at the film that premiered at the MTV Movie Awards earlier this summer. Curiously, co-star Taylor Lautner narrates the spot with the usual platitudes about sequels (“We’re taking it to the next level!” etc. etc.), and Robert Pattinson is barely in it. Seems like there should be a “Team Edward” joke here or something, but we don’t really know what those mean. Anyway, here goes:...  read more

Watch Tom Waits Play the Devil in the Trailer for The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

Still without a release date in North America, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus has its first international trailer, and it underscores the commercial woes the film will face even once its distribution plans are settled. Yes, the movie marks the last screen role for Heath Ledger, who died during production, and it also features turns by Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law in Ledger’s stead. What it does not feature, if this trailer is to be believed, is a coherent plot or any obvious hook for general audiences....  read more

Watch the Trailer for Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones

Despite the creepy "Hi, I'm the director" interlude attached to most copies, the first trailer for The Lovely Bones packs a lot of material into an approachable package. The book was a relentless sensation when it was published, but the movie is aptly pitched as an everyman mystery colored by the visual ferocity of director Peter Jackson, who seems to have returned from hyper-blockbuster mode on King Kong....  read more
