Brad Pitt on board for The Odyssey in space

|
At first, it sounds pretty routine: Variety reports that Brad Pitt has added a new adaptation of The Odyssey to his roster as a producer, and Warner Bros. is reportedly trying to maneuver him into the lead role. Sure, his previous Homer adaptation Troy (pictured above) took its time making back its budget, but these are the kind of evergreen epics almost guaranteed a profit. Nothing to see here.

Metallica: Death Magnetic

|
The architects of thrash dust off some old blueprints.

Metallica’s last three albums have seen the band sink progressively deeper into schlocky grunge and nĂ¼-metal—an indignity magnified by big-screen depictions of egomania and creative exhaustion. For Death Magnetic, the group was tasked by production maven Rick Rubin to reverse course and recapture the raw vigor of their early work. The result is a superb return to form that refines familiar touchstones: riotous instrumentation, E-tuned guitar solos and robust melodies.

But this near-Monopoly could only last so long before some of the other corporate monoliths that run the industry jumped into the fray. Meet TheWB.com, Warner's answer to the problem of streaming video distribution.

Despite controversy, Warner Bros. sticks with Towelhead

|

When a small movie called Nothing is Private debuted at the Toronto Film Festival last year, it didn't exactly come quietly. For one thing, the man behind it was Alan Ball, the writer of American Beauty and creator of Six Feet Under, who made a name for himself with subversive dramas unafraid of the darker aspects of American life. And its subject, a 13-year-old Lebanese-American girl who must sift through ethnic and sexual tension in early-’90s Houston, left even seasoned festival audiences a little squeamish.

There is a rather major snag in the way of Watchmen’s big-screen debut.

The problem is not with the filming. Warner Bros. has already begun filming the $100 million adaptation of Watchmen, with director Zack Snyder behind the camera. WB was planning on releasing the film March 6, 2009.

The problem is whether or not Warner Bros. had the right to begin filming in the first place.
