Staff Picks - Kevin Keller (multimedia producer)

Picking a “best of” list reminds me of all of the philosophical barbs one runs into when judging music. Instead of expounding upon what makes up my definition of a "top album," I’ll keep things simple.

Mugison
Hometown: Ísafjörður, Iceland
Album: Mugiboogie
Why He's Worth Watching: Mugison likely embodies the person Led Zeppelin envisioned when writing “Immigrant Song.” One moment, this man from the land of the ice and snow is sounding the hammer of the gods, alternating between an infernal howl (much like Robert Plant’s) and a guttural heavy-metal groan, the next, he’s crooning to twanging guitar over eerie strings. He’s a shape-shifter and a funnyman, and Mugiboogie builds on his four previous genre-transcending works.
For Fans Of: Tom Waits, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Led Zeppelin
Acceptance Speech: “When I was 14 years old, I was voted the best-looking guy in school, but after the ceremony I found out that some of the girls in the school were running a campaign behind my back. The campaign was called ‘Vote the Freak.’ I also found out they did this to piss off the guy who’d won it three years in a row—they had some unfinished business with him. Is this something similar?”

Triple A "Non-Commvention"

|

There’s a little corner of the radio world called “triple A” music - it covers a lot of the stuff we at Paste like.  On the radio dial, that world is usually on public or non-commercial stations - often NPR-affiliated.  So these radio stations gather once a year to hear new music and discuss what's going on in the industry and sometimes we join them to eavesdrop on their annual “Non-Commvention” hosted by our friends at WXPN 88.5 in Philadelphia. It's a great chance to check out the bands showcasing for all these program directors.

Wild Sweet Orange releases EP, tours

|

Wild Sweet Orange. It sounds like something you would find growing next to the road as you drive through the Florida country side. But the guys that comprise this band are from Birmingham, Ala., and their sound is a far cry from the campy island tunes that saturate Floridian coastline hotels.

On Tuesday, the soft and insightful indie-rock group released its EP, The Whale. The band is signed to Canvasback Music, the same label that has brought us Manchester Orchestra, Annuals and Swell Season. The band kicked off its tour yesterday.
