Zooey Deschanel contributes songs to Yes Man

|
We just named Zooey Deschanel's venture with M. Ward, She & Him, our album of the year. If you're like us and you were won over by the actress's musical chops, you might want to pay attention to the soundtrack of her upcoming film, Yes Man.

She & Him: Volume One

The sound at Park City, Utah’s Sundance House is terrible, and a chunk of the crowd is more interested in chattering and munching on hors d’oeuvres than paying attention to the duo on guitar and piano, even if it is the debut performance of what will eventually be known as She & Him—the collaboration between indie-music darling M. Ward and movie star Zooey Deschanel. This 2007 Sundance Festival audience doesn’t get high points for attentiveness—they’ve already pretty much ignored Glen Hansard of The Frames playing alongside Markéta Irglová, his co-star in the buzzing film Once.

M. Ward talks new solo album, She & Him Volume Two

It's been a little over two years since M. Ward released his last solo album, Post War, but the singer/songwriter/producer has been anything but idle in the interim. He's released an EP, lent his guitar, voice and/or production skills to more than a few artists covered in Paste, contributed to a trio of film soundtracks, made his acting debut, and become a world-famous pronoun, alongside Zooey Deschanel.

Alejandro Escovedo, Kanye, many more perform at DNC

The Democratic National Convention kicked off last night in Denver, Colo. with a tribute to Ted Kennedy and a heartwarming speech from Michelle Obama. All well and good, mind you, but it's the four-day bonanza of musicians set to perform that boggles the mind. While music has been prevalent in campaigns for the last few decades, Barack Obama and the DNC take the cake with a truckload of inspiring and interesting choices for this year's convention.

Watch the trailer for Carrey and Deschanel's Yes Man

Let us tell you a story: there once was a guy, Danny Wallace, who was a little on the negative side. In an attempt to turn his life around, he decided to say “yes” to every opportunity that came his way for a year. Yes to personal opportunities, yes to business ideas, yes to everything.

He then got involved with all kinds of antics, won $48,000, and wrote a book, Yes Man, that Warner Bros. is turning into a movie starring Jim Carrey and Zooey Deschanel. Yes!

What do high-waisted houndstooth shorts, an oversized elf and the prolific M. Ward all have in common? Not a whole lot, except for being vaguely related things to highlight Chloë Sevigny and Zooey Deschanel’s new comedy, Divorce Ranch.

The film is set in post-World War II Nevada at a ranch where quick work is made of processing divorces. Sevigny’s character brings her six-year-old son and her assistant (Deschanel) on a trip to the ranch. Although the details are a bit hazy on how all this works, Sevigny’s character has an end goal of wrangling herself a wealthy man.

Rock-doc extraordinaire Michael Lindsay-Hogg is set to direct, produce and write the project. Anne Clements will also help produce. Doubtful if this period piece will allow for aforementioned shorts or buzz cuts; however, check it out to see two of indie film's finest on the same screen.
