, one of the nation's largest folk music festivals, has just announced the line-up for its 22nd annual festival. Slated to run April 23-26, this year's events include performances by Emmylou Harris, Jim Lauderdale, Travis Tritt and Jerry Douglas, Tift Merritt, the Del McCoury Band, and, of course, the father of MerleFest, Doc Watson.
The festival was founded upon two missions: to raise money for the beautification of the Wilkes Community College Campus (MerleFest's home, in Wilkesboro, N.C.), and to honor the memory of Doc Watson's son, Merle, a young musician who died in a farming accident in 1985. MerleFest is committed to producing a "high quality diversified American roots based musical experience," a music culture Doc terms "traditional-plus."
So far the list of performers is 90+ deep, but Festival Director Ted Hagaman notes that "MerleFest is known for surprises and special moments. We still have a couple of things in the works, so we encourage fans to keep checking our website for updates to our talent line up."
Tickets go on sale Nov. 11, at 2 p.m. ET. Click here for info on pricing, schedules, contests and activities, volunteering, and more.
