Mitch Mitchell, the drummer and last surviving member of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, was found dead yesterday in a Portland hotel room. He was 61 years old.
Mitchell sat behind the drum kit for Jimi Hendrix from 1966 to 1969, as well as Hendrix's sets at Monterey, Woodstock, and the Isle of Wight. He pioneered a style of drumming that complemented Hendrix's guitar chops, inspiring many of their now-legendary stage antics.
Mitchell was playing in Portland as part of the Hendrix Experience Tour last Friday. Bob Merlis, the tour's publicist, noticed that Mitchell wasn't feeling well for the last few shows they played. Mitchell said he planned to rest in Portland for a few days before returning home to England. He was found dead early Wednesday in his room at the Benson hotel; police listed the cause of death as natural.
He is survived by his wife, Dee.
