Before countless singer-songwriters from Bob Dylan to Wilco and Feist covered his work, Woody Guthrie's songs stood alone, a massive repertoire crucial to the development of modern American music. Now, 54 Guthrie songs recorded in the 1940s have been rescued from storage in a Brooklyn basement and remastered across four discs for the box set My Dusty Road, out today.
The set, released by Rounder Records, includes six unreleased tracks as well as many of Guthrie's classics like "This Land is Your Land," "Going Down The Road (I Ain't Gonna Be Treated This Way," "Hard Travelin'" and "Pretty Boy Floyd." Guthrie historian Ed Cray and Rounder Records' Bill Nowlan also prepared a 68-page book to accompany the set, which includes liner notes, previously unpublished photos, lyrics, artwork and facsimiles of artifacts.
