Here’s your daily dose of theater nerd news: Yesterday, EW’s Hollywood Insider announced that actor Jonathan Groff will appear in a few upcoming episodes of Fox’s new hit drama Glee. Groff, who starred for several years in the anachronistic Broadway revival of Frank Wedekind’s Spring Awakening (and recently appeared in Ang Lee’s Taking Woodstock) will play the leader of Vocal Adrenaline, the unmatched rival of McKinley High’s fledgling glee club.
Naturally, his character will also serve as a “potential love interest” for the intensely spunky Rachel Berry, played by Lea Michele—who, as you may have learned in the October issue of Paste, also spent a few years treading the boards with the cast of Spring Awakening.
Groff and Michele played lovers onstage, too, so basically the only way this could get more meta is if the Glee cast unwinkingly bursts into “The Word of Your Body.” And we’re hoping the writers won’t be above throwing in a rousing rendition of “Barely Breathing” as an homage to the singer-songwriter partially responsible for Spring Awakening’s modern retooling.
No word yet on when Groff’s “five or six” episodes will air.
