Sterling Archer is arrogant, immature and rude. He’s also a really talented spy. Archer, a new animated series based on the exploits of its title character, premieres tonight at 10 p.m. EST on FX. The cast is nothing to scoff at, either: SNL’s Chris Parnell, Arrested Development’s Jessica Walter and Talk Soup’s Aisha Tyler all lend their voices to the show.
The guys behind the spies aren’t new to the animation scene; they’ve worked with Adult Swim titles like Sealab 2021 and Frisky Dingo. Still, the duo (Adam Reed and Matt Thompson) wanted to create something new and refreshing with Archer. (See what Paste wrote about Reed last fall.)
“I read a lot of the James Bond novels and he’s actually a bit misogynistic and racist,” Reed told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I wanted to focus on that.”
Set in, well, we’re not exactly sure what decade (creators say this confusion was intentional), Archer isn’t a spy show for kids, as it’s full of sexual references and a “boys will be boys” mentality. Featuring Oedipal undertones, a snarky leading man and lots of spies trying to overthrow each other, Archer shows great promise. FX seems to think so, too. Originally a set of six episodes, the network liked it so much they bumped it up to 10.
