With Lil Wayne’s incarceration date fast approaching, the guy’s gotta be going over his mental to-do list. Release another great mixtape? Check. Use up all the drugs in Mexico? Check. Provide voiceover work for the role of Jesus Christ in T-Pain’s new Adult Swim cartoon Freaknik? You’d better believe that’s a check.
unveiled clips of the cartoon special at T-Pain’s Christmas party. The show is based on the titular by-ATLiens for-ATLiens citywide party, Freaknik. The origin of Freaknik is a legend shrouded in the mists of the bygone ‘90s: The South’s own version of Spring Break, where revelers would spill out into Atlanta’s streets and interstates, shutting down traffic and generally bringing all non-party activity in the city to a halt (which is basically why it got shut down).
“So the show is going to resurrect that,” explained Freaknik Creative Director Jake Escobedo to Boombox. “It’s all drawn, and T-Pain plays the ghost of spring break, the Spirit of Freaknik. He brings this party back to Atlanta and the artists have done all this music for it, and it’s amazing.” And where does Weezy F. Baby fit into this picture? Playing Jesus of Nazareth, who preforms a song called “Ghetto Commandments,” natch.
“But wait!” you might be saying to yourself. “Wasn’t it Moses, not Jesus, who brought back the Ten Commandments? On stone tablets?” And you’d be right, but these are Ghetto Commandments, and Weezy-Jesus don’t write shit cause he ain’t got time. Freaknik is slated to air Mar. 21 on Cartoon Network.
