Zelda Rubinstein, the diminutive actress best known for her role as an eccentric psychic in 1982’s Poltergeist, died Wednesday in Los Angeles. She was 76. Rubinstein suffered a heart attack a couple of months ago and had been in the hospital since, eventually dying of natural causes. “She had ongoing health issues and unfortunately they finally overtook her,” her agent Eric Stevens told the L.A. Times.
A Pittsburgh native, Rubinstein’s acting career didn’t begin until she was middle-aged. First appearing in the 1981 comedy Under the Rainbow, she went on to act in Sixteen Candles, Teen Witch, television series Picket Fences, and, of course, three Poltergeist films.
