Dominic Cooper could be playing Iron Man’s father in the upcoming Captain America film.

The Mamma Mia! star hinted in a recent Cannes interview with Salon.com that he might play Tony Stark’s dad Howard, who is portrayed by John Slattery in Iron Man 2.

The character of Howard Stark had a crucial role to play in helping to found the S.H.I.E.L.D team back during the time of World War II, indicating his relevance to the Captain America: The First Avenger storyline which is set around the same time. Howard Stark will feature in a younger reincarnation of the Iron Man 2 role, which is the reason Slattery, 47, is not in the running for the role.

The upcoming Marvel blockbuster’s cast already includes Chris Evans as Captain America as well as Hugo Weaving, Sebastian Stan, Hayley Atwell and Toby Jones.

Filming on the Joe Johnston-directed comic book adaptation begins in June. Captain America: The First Avenger comes to theatres on July 22, 2011.
