After his soul-searching 2007 solo album, Salvation Blues, Mark Olson’s up-coming Many Colored Kite finds him approaching songwriting with neo-folk hopefulness — and a new label. The Jayhawks co-founder will release his newest batch of tunes via Ryko Records July 27.

Many Colored Kite finds Olson fusing his “desert country” sound with classic and ‘60s British folk tropes for an album buoyed by harmonies from girlfriend Ingunn Ringvold. The opening track, “Little Bird of Freedom,” features vocals from Jolie Holland. Elsewhere, Vashti Bunyan lends her talents to “No Time to Live Without Her,” a song that celebrates love.
