If bearded Americana is your thing, there’s a good chance that you’re probably already a Ray LaMontagne fan. You’re also probably already aware of LaMontagne’s next album, the self-produced God Willin’ & The Creek Don’t Rise, due out Aug. 17.
But recently, LaMontagne provided the first taste of what his fourth LP, recorded at his home somewhere deep in the woods of Massachusetts, will sound like. “Beg Steal Or Borrow” speaks to LaMontagne’s building self-confidence, which seems to grow exponentially with each new release and finally culminates with his first venture into producing. His voice still echoes with that same breathlessness, but it floats with ease over this first track, as slide guitars sing in the background. Lyrics touch on his familiar themes: descriptions of depressing hometowns, family matters and making stands with a voice that speaks with wisdom far beyond his 36 years.
