All of Donald Glover’s internet-fueled Spidey dreams crashed and burned last night when California-born, Brit-raised Andrew Garfield was announced as the new Peter Parker in a 2012 reboot of the series.
Although he’s nearly 27, Garfield projects the wide-eyed, puppy-dog look of innocent youth. Past roles include Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and The Other Boleyn Girl. He also has a part in the upcoming film about the genesis of Facebook, The Social Network (the latter of which, it was just announced, will get a score from none other than Mr. Nine Inch Nails himself, Trent Reznor).
The announcement follows a long, drawn-out casting process after we found out that the film would not be another Sam Raimi-directed sequel. Instead, Marc Webb (of (500) Days of Summer fame) will direct the movie, which was written by James Vanderbilt.
