Original Big Star bassist Andy Hummel died yesterday (July 19) after a two-year battle with cancer. He was 59.
Hummel helped to form the power-pop band in 1971 along with singer Alex Chilton (who died earlier this year), guitarist Chris Bell, and drummer Jody Stephens, who is the only surviving original member of Big Star. After the first two albums, #1 Record and Radio City, Hummel parted ways with the band. Ken Stringfellow is the band’s current bassist.
Hummel reunited with the current members of Big Star after Chilton’s death in March, performing an 18-song set in Chilton’s honor at SXSW in Austin. It was the first time in 35 years he had performed with the band.
Hummel’s service will be held tomorrow, July 21, in Weatherford, Texas.
