The Tomb Raider movie franchise, which previously starred Angelina Jolie in the titular role of Lara Croft is set to be rebooted. Producer Graham King and his GK Films have acquired the film rights to the series and are aiming to release the first installation of the reboot in 2013, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
No word yet if Jolie will return to reprise her role as Croft, but with writers yet to be hired, the possibility of a new direction, such as an origin story remains a possibility. However, Jolie previously worked on The Tourist with King, hinting that her version of Croft may return. On the other hand, an origin story would continue the trend set by other franchises, such as X-Men has with the upcoming First Class.
Additionally, the Tomb Raider videogame franchise is currently experiencing a reboot as well, with developer Crystal Dynamics launching the first in a new series of installments this year, simply entitled Tomb Raider. The rebooted game features a 21-year-old Croft who has been shipwrecked on an island and must fight to survive.
