Ever fancied yourself a giant maniacal robot with an affinity for crafting expansive, puzzling test chambers solvable only with the assistance of a physics-defying portal generator? Well, now you can indulge at least one of those fantasies.
Valve has released the official map authoring tools for its maddeningly popular first-person puzzler Portal 2, allowing users to craft their own sprawling test chambers. The public versions of the tools are still in beta, so a few bugs may be encountered, but they include many of the very tools used to create Portal 2 itself.
The tools are available as a free download for PC owners of Portal 2, and can be found under the “Tools” tab in Steam. They can be used to create singleplayer and co-op maps, new character skins, 3D models, sound effects, and music.
The following tools are included in the package:
- Updated version of Hammer, the Source level editor
- Updated Faceposer
- Example maps and instances to help build new maps
- Updated suite of command-line compiling utilities
