Wendell Pierce will play B.B. King in the upcoming biopic B.B. King and I, based on the bluesman’s friendship with drummer Michael Zanetis.
The film follows the real-life journey of King and Zanetis, who will played by Patrick Fugit, and their friendship of over 30 years, culminating with Zanetis presenting the artist with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The film is being produced by Zanetis with Frank Capra III as a co-producer. Zanetis co-wrote the indie with Melora Donoghue .
“We are thrilled that Wendell has come aboard,” Zanetis said. “We’re fortunate to have an actor of his caliber and reputation for dedication to his craft, portraying one of America’s most beloved icons. This year marks the 21st anniversary of Mr. King receiving his star and his 86th birthday, so we feel the time is right to bring our tribute to him to the big screen.”
Production is set to begin Sept. 1, with a projected spring 2012 release.
