The Associated Press has reported the death toll in a stage collapse at the Pukkelpop festival has risen to five. Three people are still in critical condition and are “fighting for their lives,” a Belgian doctor said, who added that the majority of those injured at the event were struck on the head by debris. The event, held in Hasselt, Belgium, was canceled Thursday after thunderstorms downed metal scaffolding from the stage and ripped apart tents. It was to be headlined by the Foo Fighters and Eminem.

Bands have been reacting to the event on Twitter, including Smith Westerns’ guitarist Cullen Omori, who broke the news after tweeting “Stage collapsed max almost got crushed by the tress. I hope pukkelpop has insurance bc all our shit is broke.” He has since removed the tweet, and said “Apologize to anyone who mistook tweet. Wrote direclty after running off stage. Just found out the extent of damage. All of prays go out To those hurt,” later that day.

On Twitter, some Americans complained that they couldn’t text or call their friends and family that attended the festival in Belgium. It seems the social media tool was also used to communicate that band members and crew were OK.
