News began circulating yesterday that Brooklyn’s experimental soul outfit TV on the Radio were to perform a surprise outdoor concert near the intersection of Lafayette Street and Great Jones Street in Manhattan.
The rumors turned out to be true, as the quartet—having tragically lost bassist Gerard Smith to lung cancer in April and yet to announce a permanent replacement—took the stage around 8 p.m. and performed a brief five-song set that spanned several stages of their career, from early deeper cut “Staring at the Sun” to their 2006 breakout song “Wolf Like Me” and a track from this year’s Nine Types of Light, “Repetition.”
The outdoor concert was sponsored and filmed by Heineken, much to the chagrin of many of TVotR’s anti-mainstream/anti-corporate fans. Others couldn’t have been happier to witness a surprise “pop-up show” by the band in an atypical urban setting.
