Trekkies can now rejoice! J.J. Abrams has officially signed on to direct the sequel to his 2009 blockbuster Star Trek. The director’s summer has been busy with the release of Super 8 and working on the upcoming shows Person of Interest and Alcatraz.
His commitment comes just as Alex Kurtzman, Trek co-writer with Roberto Orci, wrapped up editing his own directorial debut. The three are expected to go to work immediately, as filming is slated to begin this winter. Paramount Pictures have given a temporary release date of June 2012, giving Abrams and his crew just months to complete the project.
