According to Deadline, French film studio Gaumont launched a US television branch today, Gaumont International Television, which will debut two new shows—one of which is a one-hour drama series created by Bryan Fuller titled Hannibal. The new series details the early relationship between author Thomas Harris’ signature genius serial killer Hannibal Lecter and FBI criminal profiler Will Graham.
Fans will remember that this relationship was the focus of Harris’s first Lecter novel Red Dragon, which has twice been given the cinema treatment, first in Michael Mann’s 1986 Manhunter starring Brian Cox and William Petersen, and then again in 2002 with Brett Ratner’s Red Dragon, which saw Anthony Hopkins reprise his Academy Award-winning role of Lecter for the third time opposite Edward Norton. So far no one has been confirmed as cast for the lead role in the upcoming TV series.
Bryan Fuller was previously the creator behind the award winning series Pushing Daisies and has attracted critical acclaim for his writing credits on Heroes and other series.
