According to MTV News, Tom Cruise has confirmed his involvement with the upcoming Top Gun sequel. News on the project has been slow and often vague (especially Cruise’s involvement), but speaking with MTV News’ Josh Horowitz at an event in Dubai for the new Mission Impossible film, Cruise stated “We’re working on it,” referring to himself, director Tony Scott and producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
The sequel to the immensely popular 1986 film threatened to fade away with the loss of writer Chris McQuarrie, who is currently tied up directing One Shot, a film adaptation of a Lee Child novel of the same name in which Cruise will star as former military police officer Jack Reacher. Even without a writer, Cruise announced his commitment to seeing the project through to completion.
From the MTV interview, “I said to Tony I want to make another movie with him. He and I haven’t made a film since ‘Days of Thunder,’” Cruise said. “Tony and I and Jerry, we never thought that we would do it again. Then they started to come to us with these ideas of where it is now. I thought, ‘Wow, that would be … what we could do now.’”
