Considering his recent collaboration, it was sort of surprising to see Lou Reed’s take on Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come” was straightforward and melodic. The performance took place Sept. 15, 2011 at the Highline Ballroom in New York. Daily Motion made the video available yesterday.
The performances were to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Rides. The show was put together by producer Hal Willner and also featured Tim Robbins, Eric Mingus and James Carter. Watch the intense, eight-minute take on the song below, and check out Reed, always the innovator, using an iPad to read the song’s lyrics.
In other Reed news, the singer will hit the road this summer for a European tour titled “From VU to Lulu.” You can check out those dates here.
