We weren’t quite sure what to think when we reported on the new Father John Misty video, “Nancy From Now On” last month. Filled with nearly-nude women and drugged out visions, the video seemed nothing like what the world was used to seeing from J. Tillman’s former band, Fleet Foxes.
According to the A.V. Club, Tillman had gone through a pretty transformational musical identity crisis, saying, “All of a sudden everyone in my life was pointing out that I had done it.
“I was kind of bored playing drums in a band…which was depressing, because playing in the band was kind of a golden ticket,” he told them in a recent interview.
As the primary singer-songwriter of Father John Misty, Tillman was able to focus on that musical and personal exploration. The result of which was Fear Fun, a 12-track LP recorded in Los Angeles’ Echo Park neighborhood with producer Jonathan Wilson.
