At the Sydney Opera House yesterday evening, Sufjan Stevens ended the concert series Planetarium with a synthesized rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Joined by Bryce Dessner of the National and Nico Muhly, the Michigan-native sang the classic song with a cosmic twist during the show’s encore.
The Sydney Vivid Festival brought together the three artists for a musical collaboration which, true to the concert’s title, meditated on our solar system as they performed under a giant, planetary orb. Stevens told the crowd, “I always thought this song was about outer space, but after this week I think it’s actually about Australia.”
