Sherman Hemsley, the actor best known for his role as George Jefferson on The Jeffersons, has died, according to TMZ. Hemsley died in his home in El Paso, Texas, and the cause of his death is not yet known. He was 74.
Hemsley was raised by his mother in South Philadelphia, where he was born in 1938. He served in the Air Force for four years before moving to New York and launching an acting career. Hemsley first became famous in the early 1970s for his work on All in the Family, which was later spun-off into The Jeffersons, a hugely successful show that had an 11-season run.
Hemsley was also a professional musician. He released a single called “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head” in 1989. Hemsley had no wife or kids.
